Corn Sorting Machine for Colombian Processors: Removing Defective Kernels and Impurities

For a Colombian corn processor, quality problems rarely arrive one at a time. A delivery may combine healthy kernels with discolored pieces, black tips, insect damage, broken grain, cob fragments, husk, stones or other visible impurities. WESORT helps processors define which material belongs in the finished product and then turn that definition into a repeatable optical sorting program.

What WESORT can help solve: visible color variation, dark or stained kernels, mold-like surface marks, externally visible insect damage, immature or broken kernels, cob and husk fragments, stones, plastic and other visually distinguishable foreign material. The actual separation must be validated with representative Colombian corn samples and the buyer’s acceptance standard.

Why corn quality varies between incoming lots

Corn appearance changes with variety, growing conditions, drying, storage, transport and handling. A kernel that is accepted for animal-feed production may not meet a food-grade or export specification. A broken kernel may be a reject for one product but still suitable for milling. The first job is therefore not to adjust a camera; it is to define the commercial purpose of each output.

Which defects should be separated?

Target material Why the processor cares WESORT evaluation approach
Discolored, dark or black-tipped kernels Lower visual uniformity and may fall outside the buyer’s color tolerance. Use accepted, reject and borderline color references to establish the recipe.
Mold-like surface marks Reduce appearance quality and can trigger additional inspection. Evaluate visible surface contrast; laboratory and food-safety testing remain separate controls.
Externally insect-damaged kernels Can be visibly different in color, shape or surface condition. Test only when the damage is presented and visible to the optical system.
Broken, immature or misshapen kernels May not meet the product’s grade or size specification. Combine shape, size and visible color criteria where the samples support it.
Cob, husk, stones and plastic Increase impurity level and manual inspection burden. Separate visible contrast and shape differences; use pre-cleaning or complementary controls where necessary.

The WESORT corn color sorter is built for this type of product-specific visual evaluation. The sorting program can use color and visible shape information, but the result depends on feed presentation, dust, moisture, overlap, defect ratio and the chosen grade.

How the WESORT solution works in a corn plant

  1. Sample the lot. Record moisture, impurity level and the normal range of kernel appearance.
  2. Pre-clean the feed. Remove loose dust, oversized material and heavy foreign objects before optical inspection.
  3. Spread the kernels. Stable feeding allows the cameras to see individual kernels instead of a dense overlapping layer.
  4. Apply the recipe. The system compares each kernel with the accepted and rejected criteria.
  5. Eject selected material. Precisely timed air valves divert the target into the reject or secondary-grade outlet.
  6. Inspect both streams. Measure accepted quality, reject purity and good-product carry-over before confirming the program.

Why a conventional color setting may not be enough

Some defects are obvious by color. Others are defined by shape, area or a small surface mark. A two-view system may also miss a feature that is facing away from the camera. When the Colombian buyer’s specification includes difficult surface defects, WESORT can evaluate a multi-view configuration such as QuadEye to improve exterior coverage.

Four-view inspection can reduce missed visible features on the top, underside and sides of a kernel. It does not turn optical sorting into internal contaminant or mycotoxin detection. If the plant must identify conditions that are not visible on the surface, it should discuss complementary inspection and laboratory controls.

What changes for the processor after implementation?

The value of an optical corn sorter is not simply that it removes a few dark kernels. It gives the plant a saved, repeatable quality rule that can be checked across batches. Operators can compare the accepted and rejected outputs, adjust the recipe when the incoming crop changes and direct usable secondary material to milling or another commercial outlet.

WESORT’s multigrain sorting range can be considered for different corn capacities and line arrangements. The model should be selected after reviewing the real feed rate, kernel form, target defects and number of output streams.

A WESORT corn customer in Tanzania reported that moldy and differently colored kernels were easily separated and expressed satisfaction with the sorting result and service. This is a useful application reference, not a universal performance guarantee for every Colombian variety.

For a Colombian project, WESORT should test representative accepted kernels, difficult borderline pieces and the actual impurity mix before the final configuration is chosen.

What should a Colombian processor prepare for a test?

  1. Normal corn from the production line, not only clean showcase samples.
  2. Separate accepted, definite-reject and borderline kernels.
  3. Visible mold-like, dark, insect-damaged, broken and immature pieces.
  4. Cob, husk, stones, plastic and other foreign material that occurs in the plant.
  5. Normal and peak throughput, moisture range and upstream cleaning steps.
  6. Required output grades and acceptable good-product carry-over.
  7. Photos or video of the feed, elevator and proposed installation area.

What WESORT can provide

WESORT can review the samples, evaluate optical separability, propose a sorting recipe and discuss whether a standard chute sorter, a higher-capacity multi-channel configuration or a multi-view system is more appropriate. The project can then move from sample testing to equipment selection, commissioning guidance and remote technical support.

Test Your Colombian Corn with WESORT

Tell us whether your corn is for food, feed, milling, seed or export. Send your target defects, capacity and representative samples. WESORT can show what the machine can separate, what should remain in the accepted stream and how the proposed equipment would fit your line.
